The managing director and CEO of Nilayo Sports Management Limited, Mrs. Yetunde Olopade, has lauded the Bayelsa State government’s commitment to sports development, describing the state as one that truly grasps the power of sport for growth, youth engagement, and economic prosperity.
Mrs. Olopade commended Governor Douye Diri’s leadership for investing in crucial sporting infrastructure and programmes designed to establish Bayelsa as a prominent sporting hub in Nigeria.
“Governor Douye Diri deserves praise for the bold steps his administration is taking to cultivate sport in Bayelsa. His background as a former Commissioner for Sports provides him with a profound understanding of the sector and why such investments are vital for youth development and economic advancement.”
Amongst various initiatives, the state has commenced construction of a 30,000-capacity stadium in preparation for the 2028 National Sports Festival, alongside plans for an additional 15,000-capacity stadium, underscoring its clear vision for the future of sport.
Mrs. Olopade further highlighted Bayelsa’s recent sporting successes, noting that the state’s athletes have consistently delivered strong performances at national competitions, including triumphs at the inaugural Niger Delta Games and the National Para Games.
“Bayelsa may not be the largest state, but in sport, it has demonstrated that determination and strong leadership can yield formidable results.”
She pointed out that the Yenagoa City International 10KM Road Race, the first of its kind in the state, scheduled for Saturday, 4th April, will be instrumental in promoting sports tourism and broadening economic opportunities for local communities.
“This race isn’t solely about athletics. It’s about generating visibility for Bayelsa, opening doors for tourism, and inspiring young talent who could become future champions.”
The Newstap/SWAN Awards ceremony also acknowledged other significant contributors to Nigerian sport, including Philip Shaibu, Director General of the National Institute for Sports; Omolei Imadu, Proprietor of Yacateco Boxing Promotions; and Robert Onyeani, Proprietor of Ahudiya Nnem FC.
