South African authorities have intensified investigations into a series of women’s deaths in Ekurhuleni after a ninth body was discovered in Dawn Park, Boksburg, on Thursday.

The unidentified woman was found in an open area, bringing to nine the number of women whose bodies have been recovered across the municipality since July. Police are examining whether the cases are connected, although no link has yet been established.

The latest discovery came as officers increased their presence in the affected communities, with roadblocks and heightened patrols reported in areas including Kempton Park.

Deputy National Police Commissioner Tebello Mosikili said a multidisciplinary team had been deployed to work on the cases.

“We cannot continue picking up bodies,” Mosikili said, while assuring residents that investigators were pursuing every available lead.

A man arrested in connection with the first case, involving a woman found restrained with cable ties in July, appeared in court on Wednesday. Police are investigating whether he could be connected to any of the other deaths. His nationality has not yet been confirmed.

The killings have heightened fears among residents and renewed attention on South Africa’s wider problem of violence against women.
