Simon Nkom has retained his position as president of the Nigeria Hockey Federation (NHF) in the sports federations poll conducted yesterday in Abuja.

Nkom was re-elected unopposed to serve another four-year term as president of the NHF, following his impressive performance that has elevated Nigeria to one of the top-ranking hockey-playing nations in Africa and beyond.

Dunkwu Chamberlain emerged as the new president of the Nigeria Aquatic Federation (NAqF), taking over from Chief Mrs. Chinoye Aliyu, who did not seek re-election.

Victor Ochei was elected as the new president of the Nigeria Tennis Federation, while Shettima Muhammad and Taiyo Poopola emerged as the new presidents of the Shooting Federation of Nigeria and the Nigeria Taekwondo Federation, respectively.

In a closely contested election for the presidency of the Handball Federation of Nigeria (HFN), Mr. Jibril Saidu Ojih FNIQS was voted in as the new president of the Federation, succeeding Samuel Ocheho, who did not seek re-election after serving two terms.

Ojih, who is the Secretary General of the Commonwealth Handball Association and the North-Central Zonal Representative on the HFN board, defeated Mr. John Oris, who represents the South-South Zone on the HFN board, by a vote of 9 to 5 in the presidential election conducted by the National Sports Commission on Saturday at the Package B Indoor Sports Hall of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja.

In the HFN vice-presidential election, Otunba Sylvester Ikhumode defeated Dr (Mrs) Toyin Aluko, securing 9 votes to 5.

Earlier, Honourable Gbenga Arole triumphed over Mr. Osawe, winning 5-1 to become the South-West Zonal Representative on the board of the Handball Federation of Nigeria, following the postponement of the election weeks ago by the National Sports Commission.

Meanwhile, outgoing President of the Handball Federation of Nigeria, Mr. Samuel Ocheho, has congratulated Mr. Jibril Saidu Ojih FNIQS on his election as president of the Federation.

Ocheho remarked that Mr. Ojih has been one of the key figures who has significantly contributed to the development of handball in Nigeria and is a valuable partner in their quest to elevate the sport from its previous dormant state to the cherished sport it has become in recent years.

“I warmly congratulate Mr. Jibril Saidu Ojih, FNIQS, on his well-deserved election as the new President of the Handball Federation of Nigeria (HFN).

“Mr. Ojih has been one of the strong pillars behind the steady progress of handball in our country. His commitment, passion, and contributions to the game have been invaluable, and I am confident that under his leadership, handball in Nigeria will continue to grow in strength and stature.

“It has been an honour to serve the Federation and work alongside individuals like Mr. Ojih who share a profound love for the sport. I have no doubt that his tenure will build on our collective achievements and elevate Nigerian handball to even greater heights.

“I wish him and his new board all the best as they navigate the affairs of the Federation towards sustained excellence and success,” Ocheho added.

Ocheho also expressed his gratitude to the entire Nigerian Handball Family for their unwavering support over the years.
