An explosive end marred what had promised to be a thrilling Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) encounter as Kwara United and Rivers United battled to a dramatic draw at the Kwara State Stadium, Ilorin, yesterday.

The highly anticipated match in Ilorin lived up to its billing from kick-off, with both sides displaying urgency and attacking intent. Kwara United, backed by a vociferous home crowd, pressed forward early, determined to assert dominance on familiar turf. Rivers United, disciplined and tactically compact, absorbed pressure and looked dangerous on the counter.

The first half produced end-to-end action, crunching tackles, and near misses that kept fans on the edge of their seats. Kwara United eventually found the breakthrough amid roaring cheers in the 30th minute, but Rivers United responded with resilience, clawing their way back into the contest in search of an equaliser before the final whistle.

However, the football took a back seat in the closing minutes as controversy crept in. Several decisions by the match officials, including contentious calls in the attacking third and appeals waved away by the referee, drew loud protests from the home supporters. Tempers flared in the stands as fans voiced frustration over what they perceived as biased officiating, especially coming on the heels of the Matchday 26 encounter against Kano Pillars on Sunday, which was also marred by alleged biased officiating.

At the final whistle, emotions boiled over. Sections of the crowd surged towards the pitch in protest, with objects reportedly thrown in the direction of the refereeing crew. Security personnel acted swiftly, forming a protective shield around the officials and escorting them off the field amid chaotic scenes. Players from both teams were quickly ushered towards the dressing rooms as tension escalated inside the stadium. While no serious injuries were immediately reported, the ugly aftermath overshadowed what had been an entertaining contest between two competitive sides.

Meanwhile, Kwara United FC has condemned the acts of violence that followed its rescheduled encounter against Rivers United FC. The game, which ended in a 1–1 draw, led to an attack on Chief Okey Kpalukwu, Chairman of Chairmen in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL).

In an official statement, the Ilorin-based club expressed “profound regret and deep concern” over the unfortunate incidents, condemning what it described as the actions of “irrational elements” who engaged in unacceptable behaviour. The club stressed that the regrettable conduct did not reflect its core values or those of the majority of its loyal supporters. Kwara United reiterated its belief that sportsmanship and respect for match officials, opponents, and football administrators must remain paramount at all times.

“We deeply regret the distress caused to all parties involved,” the statement read, as the club extended its sincere and unreserved apologies to Chief Kpalukwu, the Rivers United delegation, match officials, security personnel, and innocent spectators affected by the incident.

Kwara United further pledged full cooperation with relevant authorities to ensure accountability, promising to assist in identifying and prosecuting individuals found culpable in the violence.
