NPFL: New Boys Seek Redemption As Title Contenders Hunt First Win

Following an opening weekend that delivered drama, surprises, and a stingy goalscoring return, the EuroMatch Nigeria Premier Football League rolls into Matchday Two with plenty of questions to answer. After nine goals across ten matches—less than one per game—the attacking unit across the league will be eager to rediscover their scoring touch.

With defending champions Rangers International held to a draw, and several title hopefuls dropping points, the second round of fixtures presents an early opportunity for the league’s heavyweights to stamp their authority on the 2026/27 campaign.

Sunday’s slate features a potentially explosive encounter at the Sani Abacha Stadium, where Kano Pillars host Niger Tornadoes. The Pillars demonstrated remarkable resilience by fighting back from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Kwara United, with Abdulraheem Shola scoring against his former club before veteran Rabiu Ali added another. However, Niger Tornadoes arrive in Kano brimming with confidence after stunning four-time champions Enyimba 2-1 in their opener.

With both sides showing attacking promise, this fixture carries all the hallmarks of a goal-laden affair.

Two of Matchday One’s most intriguing individual stories collide at the Enyimba Stadium, where Kun Khalifat goalkeeper Akuchie Obinna—who announced himself with a superb clean-sheet performance against Abia Warriors—faces Barau FC’s Joseph Atule, who opened his account with a goal in his team’s 3-1 victory. Atule has already spoken about challenging himself to score heavily this season, while another clean sheet for Obinna could further establish him as one of the league’s emerging goalkeeping talents.

Elsewhere, Ranchers Bees will return to action following the frightening collapse suffered by Mustapha Jibrin in their opener against Ikorodu City.

With Jibrin now recovering, Ranchers face Abia Warriors—who were held to a goalless draw by Kun Khalifat in a rain-disrupted fixture—with both teams searching for their first victory.

The highly anticipated Lagos derby between Sporting Lagos and Ikorodu City—which would have marked the first-ever top-flight meeting between the two rivals—has been postponed due to planned political activities at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena.

The NPFL has rescheduled the fixture for Wednesday, September 30. Additionally, three other Matchday Two fixtures have been postponed: Enyimba versus Shooting Stars, Warri Wolves against Rangers International, and Katsina United’s clash with Rivers United.

As the league’s second weekend approaches, the narrative is clear: the new boys are hunting for statement results, while the established giants are desperate to avoid falling behind in the early title race.

With questions lingering over which team will break the goalscoring drought and which individual will become the next headline-maker, Matchday Two promises to turn up the heat on Nigeria’s biggest football stage.
