Matchday 33 of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) delivered a dramatic shake-up at both ends of the table, with Enugu Rangers claiming the top spot and Kano Pillars significantly improving their chance of survival.
Enugu Rangers capitalized on a slip-up by former leaders Rivers United to take pole position. Despite a goalless draw against Barau FC in Kano, the “Flying Antelopes” now sit atop the league with 55 points. Their superior goal difference gives them the edge over Rivers United, who also have 55 points but suffered a damaging 2-0 defeat to Warri Wolves FC in Asaba. The result for Rivers United means they drop to second, with their title aspirations taking a hit.
Meanwhile, the battle for survival intensified, with Kano Pillars delivering a resounding performance to boost their hopes. “Sai Masu Gida” whitewashed visiting Bendel Insurance 4-0 in a dominant display. This crucial victory moved Kano Pillars to 14th in the NPFL log with 42 points, providing a much-needed buffer from the relegation zone.
In other key fixtures affecting the bottom half, El Kanemi Warriors found themselves in the relegation net after a comprehensive 3-0 defeat to Kwara United in Lagos. This loss further complicates their fight to remain in the top flight.
Elsewhere, Katsina United secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Niger Tornadoes, while Remo Stars also picked up three points with a 1-0 win against Shooting Stars. Nasarawa United surprisingly fell 1-0 to Kun Khalifat, adding another layer of intrigue to the league’s closing stages.
As the NPFL season heads towards its climax, the race for the title and the fight against relegation remain fiercely contested, promising an exciting conclusion to the campaign.
