… Olopade urges team to forget WAFCON setback, focus on South Africa playoff

The National Sports Commission (NSC) has renewed its confidence in the Super Falcons to secure qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup despite their disappointing exit from the ongoing Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.

The 10-time African champions will face South Africa in a crucial World Cup playoff in Casablanca on Thursday night, with victory keeping their hopes of reaching the global showpiece alive.

The Super Falcons suffered a narrow quarter-final defeat to Cameroon at the WAFCON but have another opportunity to secure their place in the 2027 World Cup through the inter-confederation play-off route.

NSC Director-General, Hon. Bukola Olopade, urged the players to put the disappointment against Cameroon behind them and focus fully on the decisive clash with the reigning African champions.

“The Super Falcons remain Africa’s biggest football brand and the pride of the continent. Therefore, the rare loss to Cameroon should not define them because we know how good they are,” Olopade said.

He reminded the players of the joy they have brought to Nigerians over the years and assured them of the nation’s support as they seek to overcome South Africa.

“The girls have brought us tremendous joy over the years and I want them to know that Nigerians are definitely behind them, more than ever before, even as they play this crucial game tonight,” he added.

Olopade further assured the team that the Federal Government remained committed to supporting their bid to qualify for the 2027 World Cup.

“Speaking the minds of Mallam Shehu Dikko, the Chairman of the NSC, I want to urge our girls that the Federal Government is fully behind them and will continue to do everything possible to ensure that they pick the World Cup ticket,” he said.

The NSC chief called on the Falcons to remain focused, disciplined and determined as they seek to overcome South Africa and keep Nigeria’s World Cup hopes alive.
