The National Sports Commission has described the past week as a defining period for Nigerian sports following a series of outstanding performances by Team Nigeria athletes and the country’s successful bid to host two major African football events.

Director General of the NSC, Hon. Bukola Olopade, said the recent achievements across cycling, aquatics and athletics, alongside President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s approval for Nigeria to host the 48th Ordinary General Assembly of the Confederation of African Football and the 2026 CAF Awards Ceremony, demonstrate the steady progress being made in the nation’s sports sector.

Speaking in a statement issued on Wednesday by his Special Assistant on Media, Kola Daniel, Olopade credited the administration’s commitment to sports development for the growing successes being recorded by Nigerian athletes and institutions.

“This has been another remarkable week for Nigerian sports, and it is clear that the sector will continue to improve under the leadership and support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” Olopade stated.

“Mr President has shown genuine enthusiasm and commitment towards reshaping sports in Nigeria, and we are already seeing the impact through the performances of our athletes and the increasing confidence international sporting bodies now have in Nigeria.”

Olopade described the approval for Nigeria to host the CAF General Assembly and Awards Ceremony as a significant boost to the country’s global sporting reputation.

“The decision to allow Nigeria host these important CAF events is a major statement about the country’s growing profile in international sports administration. It reflects the positive transformation currently taking place within our sports ecosystem,” he added.

President Tinubu approved Nigeria’s hosting request during the Africa Forward Summit in Nairobi, Kenya, following discussions with CAF president Patrice Motsepe.

The week also witnessed several strong performances by Nigerian athletes at continental and global competitions.

At the Confederation of African Cycling Para-Track and Track African Championships held at the Velodrome in Abuja, Team Nigeria delivered a dominant display, finishing with 16 medals comprising nine gold, five silver and two bronze medals.

Nigeria also impressed in aquatic sports at the Africa Aquatics Championships in Oran, Algeria, where the country won three bronze medals and received continental recognition for Best Aquatic Development.

In athletics, Team Nigeria produced another commendable outing at the World Athletics Relays in Gaborone, Botswana, securing three qualification tickets for the 2027 World Athletics Championships in Beijing, as well as qualification for the World Athletics Ultimate Championship.

Nigerian athletes are also currently competing at the CAA Senior African Athletics Championships taking place at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium in Legon, Accra.

Olopade reaffirmed the commission’s determination to sustain the momentum through improved athlete welfare, grassroots sports development, talent identification and increased international exposure for Nigerian athletes.

“We are building a sporting culture that rewards excellence, encourages hard work and positions Nigeria as a dominant force in global sport,” he said.

“The future is bright for Nigerian sports, and we remain fully committed to achieving even greater milestones.”
