Nigeria’s para powerlifting team made a sensational start to its Commonwealth Games campaign as Esther Nworgu won the gold medal with a new Games record, while compatriot Esther Oyema claimed silver in the women’s lightweight event.

Nworgu delivered a commanding performance to emerge champion, lifting her way to a Games record of 119.0 points and underlining Nigeria’s dominance in one of its strongest sporting disciplines.

Her record-breaking display proved too strong for the rest of the field, as she successfully defended Nigeria’s reputation as a powerhouse in Commonwealth para powerlifting.

Completing a memorable outing for Team Nigeria, the experienced Oyema finished second with a total of 115.0+ points to secure the silver medal and ensure a one-two finish for the country in the event.

The result handed Nigeria its first gold and silver medals in the women’s lightweight para powerlifting competition, providing an early boost to the nation’s medal ambitions at the Games.

Nworgu’s achievement adds another milestone to her growing international career, with the new Commonwealth Games record highlighting her status among the world’s elite para powerlifters.
