An elder statesman and former governor of Old Anambra State, Senator Jim Nwobodo, has described the presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 Peter Obi as the most respectable presidential candidate.
While praying that the aspirations of Obi, who is now a member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) will be answered, he stated that they are still praying to God that an Igbo man will be the president of Nigeria one day.
He stated this yesterday when Obi and his associates paid a courtesy call on the former Anambra State Governor at his Amechi Country Home.
Nwobodo described the visit as a mark of respect and what his people are known for.
“We respect elders, I’m no longer just Jim Nwobodo the politician , I’m an elder statesman and that is why they came to see,” he stated.
“We are one of the people that formed this country called Nigeria, Zik of Afrika was there and I believe that he will be angry in his grave that what he fought for has not been made.
“I have always said we want to know our position in Nigeria, are we strangers? We still pray to God that an Igbo man will be the president of Nigeria,” he stated.
Nwobodo further lamented that for over 50 years, an Igboman has not emerged as president of Nigeria.
Responding, Obi said they visited Nwobodo to felicitate with him on the New Year and to wish him well as a respected leader.
He added that they will come back to discuss politics and the way forward.
Obi, however, expressed happiness that the elder statesman prayed for them and granted the audience.
Earlier, the leader of the delegation, Senator Ben Obi, reiterated that they came on a courtesy visit to Jim Nwobodo.
He noted that the visit was agreed upon on December 26, when he spoke with the elder statesman.
The former presidential aide said after he informed Obi of their discussion, they agreed to visit Nwobodo on January 6 as their leader and father, adding that they have been visiting the elder statesman yearly.
“We have not come here to discuss politics but just to wish him well as we agreed and he has hosted us to a good launch.” He stated.
He stated that the delegation will be complete to brief Nwobodo on the issue of Nike Lake Declaration of Peter Obi into ADC.
Members of the delegation were former Ebonyi State Governor, Sam Egwu, Former Governor of Enugu State, Okwesilieze Nwodo, Senator Gilbert Nnaji, among others .
