Nigeria’s rising sprint sensation, Samuel Ogazi, has set a new national record in the men’s 400 metres after producing a sensational performance at the SEC Track and Field Championships in Auburn, Alabama, United States.
The 20-year-old quarter-miler clocked an astonishing 43.95 seconds to become the first Nigerian athlete in history to run below the 44-second mark in the event.
The time also places him among the fastest men in the world this season and underlines his growing reputation as one of Nigeria’s brightest athletics prospects.
Ogazi’s latest feat came barely two weeks after he erased the long-standing national record of 44.17 seconds set 39 years ago by Nigerian athletics legend Innocent Egbunike.
At the time, Ogazi had recorded 44.02 seconds, signalling his readiness to challenge the world’s elite quarter-milers.
However, his latest performance in Alabama confirmed his rapid progression and placed him firmly among the leading contenders ahead of major international competitions.
The Kaduna-born athlete, who studies at the University of Alabama, has enjoyed a remarkable rise this season after opening his campaign with 44.57 seconds in March before steadily improving with each outing.
Athletics observers believe the youngster could become one of Nigeria’s strongest medal prospects at the forthcoming Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
Ogazi is expected to face stiff competition from some of the world’s leading 400m runners, including Canada’s Christopher Morales Williams, South Africa’s Lythe Pillay and Botswana’s Olympic star Letsile Tebogo.
His recent performances have generated excitement among Nigerian athletics followers, many of whom see him as a potential successor to some of the country’s greatest quarter-milers.
With the World Championships and Commonwealth Games fast approaching, attention will now shift to whether Ogazi can maintain his impressive form on the biggest stages of international athletics.
