Raphael Onyedika has reportedly turned down a new contract offer from Belgian Pro League stalwarts Club Brugge, signalling his intention to leave the club during the upcoming summer transfer window.
According to the Belgian media outlet Het Nieuwsblad, Club Brugge has been engaged in protracted negotiations with the 22-year-old defensive midfielder, making multiple attempts to secure his long-term future at the Jan Breydel Stadium.
However, Onyedika has consistently rejected each proposal put before him, fuelling speculation that he has set his sights on a move to a more prominent European league.
The former FC Midtjylland star was heavily linked with a January exit, with Turkish Süper Lig leaders Galatasaray and German Bundesliga side VfL Wolfsburg both expressing strong interest. Club Brugge, determined to retain their influential anchor man, blocked any mid-season departure. But with the summer window approaching, the 19-time Belgian champions may now struggle to hold onto their prized asset.
Onyedika’s current contract, signed when he arrived from Denmark in 2022, is set to expire in approximately one year. This shrinking timeline puts Club Brugge in a precarious position: either cash in on the player in the coming months or risk losing him for free next summer.
The situation has not gone unnoticed in England. Premier League club Aston Villa are reported to be among the sides closely monitoring Onyedika’s contractual standoff. With Villa seeking to reinforce their midfield under Unai Emery, the Nigerian’s physical presence, ball-winning ability, and growing experience in European competitions make him an attractive target.
Onyedika has developed into a key figure for Club Brugge since his €10 million move from Midtjylland, featuring regularly in both domestic fixtures and UEFA Champions League campaigns. His desire to test himself at a higher level appears to be the driving force behind his refusal to extend his stay in Belgium.
As the summer transfer window approaches, all eyes will be on whether Club Brugge can convince their midfield general to change his mind — or whether they will be forced to negotiate a departure on their own terms.
