The Osun State Government has granted approval for Osun Babes, the state’s female football team, to participate in the Nigeria Women Premier League, NWPL, for the 2025/2026 season.

The announcement was made in a statement issued by Kehinde Johnson, the Senior Special Assistant to Governor Ademola Adeleke on Football Matters, on Friday in Osogbo.

Johnson noted that the decision followed the state government’s renewed efforts to promote sports development and enhance the participation of women in competitive football.

According to him, the approval demonstrates the administration’s continued support for the advancement of women’s sports across Osun State.

“The Osun State Government has approved the participation of Osun Babes in the Nigeria Women Premier League for the 2025/2026 season,” Johnson said.

“This approval reflects the government’s ongoing commitment to encouraging sports excellence and empowering female athletes to compete at national and international levels,” he added.
Johnson explained that the move was part of the state’s strategic vision to provide a platform for young female footballers to develop their talent and represent the state proudly.

He also commended Governor Ademola Adeleke and the Deputy Governor, Kola Adewusi, for their consistent support towards sports initiatives within the state.

“We sincerely appreciate His Excellency, Senator Ademola Jackson Nurudeen Adeleke, and His Excellency, Prince Kola Adewusi, for their unwavering dedication to the growth of sports in Osun State,” he said.

Johnson acknowledged the role of the Commissioner for Sports in ensuring that the state’s football programmes remain active and competitive.

He expressed confidence that Osun Babes would perform creditably well in the forthcoming season and make the state proud through their commitment and teamwork.

With this December, the Osun Babes, one of Nigeria’s notable female football teams, are expected to commence preparations immediately for the 2025/2026 Nigeria Women Premier League
