Over 200 Road Safety Officers, Others Benefit From Free Eye Screening

Over 200 Road Safety Corps Officers and members of the Zawan community have benefitted from the free eye screening exercise to mark this year’s World Glaucoma Day in Jos South local government area of Plateau State .

The event was sponsored by Sight Savers International in collaboration with Health and Development Support Programme HANDS,

Christian Blind Mission (CBM) and the Plateau State Ministry of Health.

Speaking at the Federal Road Safety Corps  RS 4.14 Bukuru Unit Command, venue of the screening,  Programme Officer

Health and Development support Programme (HANDS) Dr. Florence Akuchi Mbatuegwu said the essence of this exercise is to create awareness and screening activities that is  centered on reaching rural communities and offering free, professional consultations.

She   urged residents to check their eyes, especially those over 40 or with a family history of Glaucoma  disease.

The programme officer further explained that African populations have higher risk, requiring earlier and regular screenings.

She commended the Plateau State government for  strengthening partnerships with NGOs like HANDS Nigeria to offer wider screening access and free eye  checks to combat this leading cause of irreversible blindness.

Similarly screening and awareness lectures took place at the FRSC Headquarters Zaria road Jos, the Plateau State capital.
