Oyo Police Disburse N38m To 48 Families Of  Fallen Officers

Oyo State Police Command on Thursday presented welfare cheques totalling ₦38,002,359.70 to the families of 48 officers who died while serving the force, under the Inspector-General of Police’s Group Life Assurance and Family Welfare Scheme.

The Commissioner of Police, Abimbola Olugbenga handed over the cheques to the beneficiaries at the command headquarters in Eleyele, Ibadan, on behalf of the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu.

The force said every officer who dies leaves a family behind, and described the intervention as testament that their sacrifices are not forgotten.

Olugbenga said the insurance payment formed part of a broader welfare effort by the IGP to improve the welfare of personnel, boost morale within the force, and support the families left behind. He assured the beneficiaries that their loved ones did not die in vain.

The Group Life Assurance and Family Welfare Scheme is designed to provide financial support to the families and dependants of police officers who lose their lives in the course of duty. Thursday’s disbursement brought the total number of beneficiary families in Oyo State under the current exercise to 48.

Beneficiaries were urged to use the funds judiciously for the upkeep of their households, and to continue to identify with the police, as the force said its connection with the families of fallen officers does not end with the payout.

The exercise forms part of a broader welfare framework the Nigeria Police Force runs nationally to cushion the financial impact of a serving officer’s death on their family, and comes as police commands across the country continue to face the loss of personnel in the line of duty.
