The Paralympic Committee of Nigeria (PCN) has opened a training camp in Lagos ahead of the upcoming major international Para-Championships.
PCN president Sunday Odebode announced that the camp was part of preparations for a series of international competitions earmarked for the nation’s elite athletes with disabilities. These include the World Para Championship in Santiago, Chile, the Para Athletics Grand Prix in India, qualification events for regional Para table tennis for the World Championship, and qualifiers for wheelchair basketball and Para swimming.
“We are very pleased that the camp has been launched for our Para athletes; this would not have been possible without the support of the National Sports Commission and the intentional leadership of both Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko and Director General Hon. Bukola Olopade,” Odebode stated.
“We have not experienced this level of support in the Para sports community before, and we cannot overstate our gratitude to the President of the country, Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for placing our sports in the hands of capable technocrats.”
Odebode emphasised that such timely preparations lead to outstanding results at international competitions, which the country’s Para athletes are keen to achieve. “The motivation and determination of our Para athletes have been greatly enhanced due to the attention we are receiving from the NSC, and our main goal is to deliver standout performances at the 2026 Commonwealth Games and the Los Angeles Olympic Games in 2028.”
