The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudasiru Obasa, has described parliament as the backbone of democracy.
Obasa said this during a session of plenary to commemorate World Parliamentary Day on Tuesday in Lagos.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that June 30 is recognised globally as World Parliamentary Day.
The speaker emphasised the critical role parliaments play in promoting democracy and ensuring accountability.
Obasa underscored the need for greater awareness of the legislature’s role in the society and reiterated the Assembly’s commitment to democratic values.
He urged the state’s parliamentarians to do more in propagating the sustainability of democratic governance.
The Speaker urged the Clerk, Mr Lekan Onafeko, to send a congratulatory message to the Senate President,Mr Godswill Akpabio; the Speaker House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abass; senators and other members of the National Assembly for their contributions to nation building.
Earlier, the prime mover of the motion, the Deputy Majority Leader, Mr Adedamola Kasunmu, said the day was recognised globally to celebrate parliaments for their role in strengthening democratic institutions and promoting accountability.
Kasunmu stressed the importance of building inclusive, transparent and responsive democratic structures.
He said there was the need for increased public engagement in parliamentary processes and promotion of civic education to rebuild trust between citizens and leaders.
In his contribution, Oladipo Ajomale (Oshodi-Isolo II) ,noted that the World Parliamentary Day was not being given the right attention and suggested that future celebrations be formally marked within the House to create greater awareness.
He appreciated Obasa for his dedication to legislative duties and acknowledged his vast experience as a parliamentarian.
On his part, Desmond Elliott (Surulere I) applauded the founding fathers of Nigeria’s legislature.
Elliot called for their proper recognition and celebration.
The lawmaker also urged the Conference of Speakers of Legislatures of Nigeria to enhance inter-regional engagement and cooperation. (NAN)
