The 2023 candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 presidential election, Mr Peter Obi has expressed his deep concern for Taiwo Awoniyi, the Nigerian footballer who suffered a severe injury while playing for Nottingham Forest in the English Premier League.

Obi made the appeal in a heartfelt message shared on social media in the wake of Awoniyi sustaining a ruptured intestine due to a collision with the goalpost during a recent match.

The incident, which has left Awoniyi in an induced coma following emergency surgery, has prompted an outpouring of support from fans and fellow athletes alike.

Obi highlighted the resilience and bravery of the young athlete, emphasising that Awoniyi’s determination to continue playing despite injury was a testament to the indomitable Nigerian spirit.

In his post, Obi stated, “We must appreciate and celebrate such young men who continue to lift our flag high, even at great personal risk.”

He urged the football community, the authorities, and citizens of Nigeria to keep Awoniyi in their thoughts and prayers during this challenging time for him and his family.

The former Anambra State governor underscored the need for better support and recognition for athletes who sacrifice so much for their country, calling for a commitment to ensuring that such sacrifices are met with adequate care and support.

Obi’s remarks resonate with many Nigerians who have rallied around Awoniyi, showing solidarity and support through social media and public forums.

The former presidential candidate concluded his message with a prayer for Awoniyi’s recovery, addressing the importance of building a nation where patriotism is honoured through proper care for its heroes.

“May he recover fully and return stronger,” he said, adding, “God bless Taiwo Awoniyi. God bless the Super Eagles. God bless Nigeria,” he prayed.

As the football community and the nation await updates on Awoniyi’s condition, calls for supportive measures for athletes continue to grow, highlighting the importance of the role sports play in uniting the country and showcasing Nigerian talent on the world stage.
