The police command in Ogun State yesterday said it had started a statewide operation targeting cars and buses running with covered, faded, hidden or unauthorised number plates.

According to the command’s spokesperson, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, the move followed an order from the Inspector-General of Police to boost security and keep residents safer.

According to him, the state commissioner of police, Mr Bode Ojajuni, instructed area commanders, divisional police officers and tactical team commanders to seize any vehicle breaking the rule for further checks.

He said the ‘sweep’ also covers cars with altered, unauthorised, or wrongly issued plates, adding that only official vehicles approved to fly flags under protocol are exempted.

Babaseyi urged drivers, transporters, and fleet owners to make sure their plates are genuine and clearly visible.

He stressed that the operation isn’t meant to harass law-abiding citizens, but to help police identify vehicles and investigate crimes more quickly.

“The initiative will assist law enforcement agencies in tracking criminal suspects and strengthening the state’s security architecture.

“The command reiterates its commitment to protecting lives and property while residents are advised to comply with the directive,” he said.
