The Association of Retired Police Officers Association of Nigeria (REPON) has said that it is in the process of going to the National Assembly to press home its demands, which include passage of a bill for the establishment of a police pension board that has been lying before the legislative chamber since 2012.

The secretary of the Bauchi State chapter of Association of Retired Police Officers of Nigeria, ASP John Iliya told a press conference held at NUJ Bauchi yesterday, that their case has been in the National Assembly since 2012 when the struggle started.

“We cannot continue to entertain these false promises any longer,” Iliya said.

“In May 21/05/2024 a protest in pursuance of our case was carried out at the National Assembly gate where the Chairman Senate Committee on Police Affairs Senator Ahmed Abdulkadir Mallam Madori and his committee members promised that our demand will be done on or before September 2024,” he noted.

Iliya said that up till today (2nd October, 2024), there wasn’t anything mentioned about retired police officers nationwide, let alone Bauchi in particular.
He explained that having their demands not met as promised by the National Assembly, they have no other option than to reoccupy the National Assembly to restate their demands, assuring that they would soon storm the legislative chamber in Abuja.

He outlined the other demands as exiting the Nigeria Police Force from the contributing pension scheme (CPS), and the establishment of a Police Pension Board to enable police retirees manage themselves.

The police retirees association wondered why the IGP’s elongation bill was given preference and passed by the NASS even without a public hearing, while the police pension board bill has not been attended to by the lawmakers.
