Portugal Suspends Ronaldo Provisionally As Disciplinary Probe Begins

The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) has provisionally suspended Cristiano Ronaldo while its disciplinary body examines the events surrounding his exit from the national team’s training camp in September.

The FPF Disciplinary Council announced the decision in a statement reported by Portuguese public broadcaster RTP on Saturday, October 10, 2026.

According to the statement, the council decided on October 9 to begin disciplinary proceedings against Ronaldo over possible disciplinary consequences arising from facts reported to it on October 7.

The federation said a “non-automatic provisional suspension of the player” had been imposed, quoting the Portuguese wording “foi determinada a suspensão preventiva não automática do jogador.”

The matter was forwarded to the FPF’s Disciplinary Investigation Commission on October 10 and marked urgent. The federation also said information about the proceedings would stay confidential until the investigation concluded.

Portuguese sports broadcaster SPORT TV also carried reports of the suspension on October 10, quoting the disciplinary statement.

Ronaldo left Portugal’s training camp in Copenhagen on September 30 after a dispute with head coach Jorge Jesus over his role in the side.

In an October 6 report, beIN SPORTS said Ronaldo had apologised for leaving the camp and had signalled that he would accept whatever punishment was handed to him.

“I should not have done it. The responsibility is exclusively mine,” Ronaldo said in a statement quoted by beIN SPORTS, while apologising to his national team teammates.

The forward also ruled out retiring from international football and said he was willing to return to the national team after serving any suspension, according to beIN SPORTS.

RTP reported that Ronaldo had likewise expressed a willingness to return to Portugal’s squad.

The federation’s decision remains provisional. The disciplinary proceedings are still ongoing, and the statement did not indicate what final punishment Ronaldo might face.
