As part of measures to fast-track the post insurgency recovery process, the Yobe State governor, Hon Mai Mala Buni yesterday, hosted his counterpart the governor of Far North Region of Cameroon and chairman Forum of Governors of the Lake Chad Basin Region, Mr Mijinyawa Bakari.
Buni while speaking during the occasion in Damaturu described the visit as an opportunity for them to exchange ideas on the challenges of the insurgency ravaged areas for the betterment of the region.
The governor said the level of destruction experienced by the member states who lost many lives and property, displacement of people and disruption of socio-economic is still fresh and regressive to development efforts.
He said this among others informed the decision of the governors of the forum to collectively seek to address common challenges through holistic approach aimed at building sustainable peace and security in the Lake Chad Basin region.
“Approval was granted to the Lake Chad Basin Commission (LCBC) with support from the African Union (AU) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), to develop a Regional Stabilization Strategy (RSS).
“The strategy was designed for recovery and resilience aimed at combating the root causes of the conflict and its sustaining factors as well as addressing the humanitarian, development, and climate change consequences. The Regional Stabilization Strategy was also endorsed by the AU Peace and Security Council in 2018.
“I am glad to inform you that the Yobe State government has remained committed and resolute in pursuance of the goals that we, the Lake Chad Basin Governors agreed to achieve in the implementation of the Joint Action Programmes (JAPs) and Territorial Action Plans (TAPs),” he said.
The governor of Far North Region of Cameroon and chairman Forum of Governors of the Lake Chad Basin Region Mr Mijinyawa Bakari said he was in Yobe State as a follow up to resolutions reached during a meeting of the forum in Yaoundé last year.
“This present working visit will give us the opportunity to first discuss transborder security context and the perspective of the synergy of operation, perspective of amelioration of transborder cooperation in the management of ex-Boko Haram fighters,” he added.
