Premier League Icon Milner Retires After 24 Seasons

After 24 seasons across England’s top flight, former England star James Milner has officially hung up his boots. The 40-year-old, known for his versatility and professionalism, became a free agent following a three-year spell at Brighton & Hove Albion.

Milner’s career spanned six different Premier League clubs, and he set a new benchmark for league appearances in February.

He made his senior debut for his boyhood club, Leeds United, at just 16 years old in November 2002, and went on to lift the Premier League trophy three times – twice with Manchester City and once with Liverpool. His 2019 Champions League triumph with the Reds remains another career highlight.

On the international stage, Milner earned his first England cap while at Aston Villa in 2009, finishing with 61 appearances and representing his country at two European Championships and two World Cups.

“I’ve been lucky to live through unforgettable moments – from relegation battles to trophy wins, European nights, and playing for England at major tournaments,” Milner wrote on social media. “But what I’ll value most are the people and friendships football gave me.”

When Milner debuted for Leeds in 2002, he was the second-youngest player in Premier League history. A month later, he became the league’s youngest-ever scorer – a record that now ranks third behind Max Dowman and James Vaughan.

Injuries limited him for most of the 2024–25 season, but he fought back to feature in 22 matches across all competitions in 2025–26. His 658th and final Premier League appearance came in Brighton’s season-ending fixture.

“From that first Leeds debut at 16 to barely being able to lift my foot last year, then coming back to help Brighton reach European qualification again at age 40 – I never dreamed of this journey,” he added.

After two seasons in Leeds’ first team, Milner moved to Newcastle following the club’s relegation to the Championship in 2004. Further stops at Aston Villa (2008) and Manchester City (2010) followed, where he helped City secure their first two league titles in 2012 and 2014.

He joined Liverpool in 2015, spending eight years at Anfield and making 332 appearances, scoring 26 goals. In 2020, he was part of the side that ended Liverpool’s 30-year league title drought. Milner also won the FA Cup and League Cup with both Liverpool and Manchester City.
