The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Students’ Engagement, Comrade Asefon Sunday, has hailed the education reforms of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as unprecedented.
He declared that students across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) will mobilise in support of the All Progressives Congress in the forthcoming elections.
Asefon stated this while speaking at the inauguration of a Monitoring Committee and the FCT Students Campaign Council in Abuja.
The presidential aid said the student body would move across the six Area Councils to galvanise support for the ruling party, citing the administration’s record in the education sector and infrastructure development within the FCT, noting that the newly constituted structure would ensure effective mobilisation of students at all levels, from tertiary institutions to colleges of education, nursing and health technology schools.
“We are gathering this body to move across the six Area Councils we have in Abuja to mobilise support for our party. We are here to ensure that students schooling in Abuja, those in colleges of education, schools of nursing, schools of health, and even those studying outside Abuja but residing here, come out on election day to vote APC,” he said.
He added that even students studying in neighbouring towns such as Keffi but residing in communities within the FCT would be encouraged to participate actively in the electoral process.
Asefon attributed the mobilisation drive to what he described as the tremendous work of President Tinubu, particularly in repositioning the education sector.
According to him, the President’s conviction that education remains the most enduring legacy has translated into concrete policy actions.
“Since he came on board, as promised during his campaign, a four-year course is now running for four years and a five-year course for five years,” he said.
He further commended the establishment of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund, saying it had expanded access to higher education for students from less privileged backgrounds.
The newly inaugurated seven-man campaign team is headed by Comrade Adeyeye Olugbenga, Coordinator of the FCT Students Campaign Council.
Responding, Olugbenga said the council had already commenced sensitisation efforts across the Area Councils, encouraging eligible citizens, particularly students, to register and obtain their Permanent Voter Cards as a first step towards participation.
“We are already sensitising and encouraging citizens to register and obtain their voter cards. That is the first step.”
He commended President Tinubu for significant strides in the education sector and stressed the importance of sustaining the reforms through continued political support.
