Real Madrid captain Dani Carvajal will leave the club at the end of the season after an extraordinary trophy-laden career spanning more than a decade.
The Spanish giants confirmed the departure on Monday, paying tribute to one of the most decorated players in the club’s history.
Carvajal has made 450 appearances for Real Madrid and won 27 major trophies, including six UEFA Champions League titles and four La Liga crowns.
Real Madrid president Florentino Perez described the defender as “a legend and symbol” of both the club and its academy system.
The 34-year-old progressed through Madrid’s famed La Fabrica academy before joining Bayer Leverkusen in 2012. Real Madrid activated a buy-back clause just a year later, beginning a remarkable second spell at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Carvajal’s final appearance for the club is expected to come this weekend against Athletic Bilbao.
Persistent injuries throughout the campaign are also expected to deny him a place in Spain’s World Cup squad this summer.
