Repair Of First Niger Bridge: Boat Accident Claims Lives, Others Missing

Over eight persons have been confirmed dead and others missing following a boat accident that occurred on the waterways of the Asaba Onitsha in Oshimili South local government area of Delta State.

Their lifeless bodies were discovered floating along the river.

It may not be unconnected to the rehabilitation and maintenance activities on First Niger Bridge and its recent closure to traffic to enable the federal government carry out urgent repairs following the discovery of vandalised sections and damaged components.

The rehabilitation and maintenance activities have hampered movements by those living around the bridge in Onitsha, Anambra state and Asaba, Delta state who resort to using boats especially with the hold-ups on the bridge.

The boat accident was said to have occurred when the boat carrying passengers collided with a submerged log, resulting to the fatal accident.

“The resultant collision threw many passengers overboard into the water, many of whom were unable to swim and were not equipped with life jackets.

“Many of passengers on the ferry drowned almost immediately upon being flung into the river, while others went missing in the murky water.”

Eyewitnesses report that the boat may be travelling at high speed when the accident occurred.

Witnesses recounted harrowing moments of desperation as passengers struggled to stay afloat.

Meanwhile, search and rescue efforts were launched, but the fate of the missing passengers remains uncertain.

Families of the victims have been left devastated, with many still clinging to the hope that the missing, including others, may still be found alive.

Rescue teams continue to comb the area where the accident happened, but hopes of finding survivors are fading as time passes.

Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Bright Edafe, solicited for patience to confirm the issue.

Days ago, personnel working at the bridge earlier raised concerns over inadequate lighting, saying the situation was making it difficult to effectively monitor and carry out activities during night shifts.

They also complained about inadequate sanitary facilities around the area where some of the personnel are staying, describing the condition as a potential health concern.

The Minister of Works, Engr. Dave Umahi, had earlier indicated that some of the rehabilitation work would be carried out at night to accelerate the process and minimise disruption.

Earlier, the officer in charge of the personnel at the site, who requested anonymity, identified inadequate lighting as one of the major challenges affecting operations at night.

According to the officer, poor visibility was making it difficult for personnel to effectively monitor activities around the bridge during night shifts.

He also complained about the sanitary condition of the under-bridge area where some of the personnel were camped, saying the workers had to clean up the environment themselves when they arrived.

The officer appealed for improved accommodation and additional food support for the personnel.

He, however, commended Onitsha South mayor for visiting the site and providing assistance, saying the gesture made the workers feel valued and appreciated.

“We feel loved and appreciated. We are happy seeing you around,” he said.
