The House of Representatives Committee on Petroleum Resources (Downstream) has commended Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals for increasing its crude oil processing capacity to 700,000 barrels per day (bpd), describing the achievement as a major boost for Nigeria’s energy sector and economic growth.

The committee, in a statement signed by its chairman, Hon. Ikenga Ugochinyere, said the refinery’s latest milestone demonstrates Nigeria’s industrial capabilities and reinforces its strategic role in strengthening the country’s energy security.

According to the lawmakers, the refinery’s ability to exceed its installed nameplate capacity of 650,000 bpd during a performance test conducted by Process Licensors reflects world-class engineering standards, operational efficiency and long-term investment in Nigeria’s economy.

“The refinery’s ability to exceed its nameplate capacity of 650,000 barrels per day during a performance test conducted by the Process Licensors is evidence of world-class engineering, operational excellence, and strategic investment in Nigeria’s economic future,” the statement said.

The committee noted that the development further consolidates the refinery’s position as the world’s largest single-train petroleum refinery while enhancing domestic refining capacity and reducing Nigeria’s dependence on imported petroleum products.

It added that the refinery is playing a significant role in supporting national energy security and transforming the country’s industrial landscape.

The lawmakers said the achievement reflects the vision and commitment behind the project, stressing that the refinery has become a key driver of economic transformation through employment generation, foreign exchange savings, industrial expansion and value addition across the oil and gas value chain.

“The refinery has emerged as a pillar of economic transformation through job creation, foreign exchange savings, industrial development, and value addition across the oil and gas value chain,” the committee stated.

The committee further observed that the increased refining capacity would help stabilise the supply of petroleum products, improve Nigeria’s competitiveness in regional and global energy markets, and enhance government revenue generation.

While congratulating the management and staff of the refinery on the feat, the lawmakers urged the company to sustain high operational standards, promote environmental sustainability and continue engaging relevant stakeholders to maximise the refinery’s benefits to the Nigerian economy.
