Rev. Fr. George Adimike: Catholic Priest Who Builds Houses For Widows

At a time, many widows and the vulnerable live under the heavy weight of poverty, homelessness and abandonment, a Catholic priest, Very Rev. Fr. George Adimike, is giving them hope through the provision of decent shelter and food in some rural settings in the South East region.

Through his Faithspiration Initiative, Dr Adimike has become a symbol of compassion, demonstrating practical Christianity to the downtrodden.

A priest of the Catholic Archdiocese of Onitsha in Anambra State, Fr Adimike is reputed for combining evangelism with charity. This has earned him admiration and his ministry for going beyond the pulpit to meet the people in their worst state.

Ordained as a priest in July 2007, the Anambra-born cleric, a native of Awka-Etiti in Idemili South local government area, extends his philanthropy beyond his operational areas.

Recently, he took his practical Christianity to Diaba Village, Opi-Agu, in Nsukka local government area of Enugu State, where the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Nsukka, Most Rev. Godfrey Igwebuike Onah, blessed a residential bungalow built by Adimike for an indigent woman, Mrs Anthonia Ezugwu, and her children.

Addressing the gathering at the dedication of the house, Fr. Adimike said he never imagined he would return to Opi-Agu to build another house after the first intervention.

He said the idea began after Anthonia informed him during an Easter charity outreach that she had no shelter.

“When Anthonia told me she had no house, I initially gave her some money during our Easter charity programme and left. But during my priestly anniversary in July, I visited her place and saw the structure in terrible condition.

“I first thought of helping to renovate it. But after posting it on my WhatsApp status, someone called me and said that renovation wouldn’t help because the building would still collapse. I then said I wanted to build a new house and asked if he could support me. He immediately pledged N1.5 million.

“At that point, I took it as a clear message from God that the woman needed a new home,” he said.

For several years, Fr Adimike has transitioned from being a preacher and scholar to a humanitarian who is deeply committed to restoring dignity to vulnerable people, especially widows.

Fr. Adimike studied in Rome, Italy, where he earned a doctorate, before returning to Nigeria to continue pastoral work in the Onitsha Archdiocese. He served as secretary and protocol officer for Public Affairs to the Archbishop of Onitsha, Most Rev. Valerian Okeke, while also directing the archdiocese’s social communications activities.

According to the Sun Newspaper, Adimike’s growing reputation rests largely on his unusual commitment to helping widows and indigent families secure decent shelter. In one of his most celebrated acts of charity, Adimike built and furnished a four-bedroom bungalow for a poor widow, Mrs Roseline Ugwuezema, in Opi-Agu community, Nsukka area of Enugu State. The woman and her children were living in a dilapidated thatched hut before help came for them through the priest

Furthermore, through the Faithspiration Initiative, Adimike has executed food distribution programmes, youth empowerment schemes and prison outreaches.

Known for his simple lifestyle and accessible personality, Adimike often describes charity as “practical Christianity.” His work has inspired many young Catholics and community volunteers to participate in humanitarian service. Admirers frequently compare his ministry style to that of missionaries who dedicate their lives to serving the poor and the forgotten.
