Rivers APC Rejects Impeachment Move Against Governor Fubara

The Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has firmly rejected the Rivers State House of Assembly’s impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu, warning that such actions were capable of destabilising the state.

In a statement issued on Thursday by Rivers State APC Spokesperson, Darlington Nwauju, the party expressed concern over the “unfortunate developments” emerging from the House of Assembly, acknowledging the legislature’s constitutional role as an independent arm of government with oversight powers but deeming the impeachment attempt unacceptable.

The APC condemned what it described as unresolved internal conflicts within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), cautioning that these issues should not spill over to threaten the stability of the APC-led government in Rivers State.

The party linked the impeachment threat to budgetary disagreements, arguing that such matters do not warrant extreme legislative measures like impeachment.

Recalling the period of emergency rule, the APC noted that the President submitted a budget to the National Assembly in May 2025, which was approved by the Senate on June 25, 2025, and by the House of Representatives on July 22, 2025, with a total allocation of ₦1.485 trillion.

The budget was intended to cover a full year until August 2026, and the party highlighted that the governor is not constitutionally required to present a supplementary budget if satisfied with the current appropriation.

Further, the APC stressed that the Constitution allows a governor to continue spending for up to six months into a new fiscal year.

The Rivers APC, therefore, called on members of the State House of Assembly—especially those elected on the APC platform—to resist external pressures aimed at destabilising the government.

“We will do everything possible to ensure that the APC-led government of Rivers State is not undermined through internal disagreements,” the statement affirmed.

The party urged lawmakers to halt the impeachment process immediately, warning that it could harm the APC’s image and derail ongoing development projects in the state.

In conclusion, the APC appealed to all political actors to respect democratic principles and prioritise governance, rather than allowing political rivalries to disrupt Rivers State’s stability.

Earlier, LEADERSHIP reported that at the resumed plenary session on Thursday, the State Assembly led by Speaker Martins Amaewhule initiated impeachment proceedings against Governor Fubara and deputy Ngozi Odu after rolling out a series of allegations of gross misconduct against the duo.
