Sahel Humanitarian Crisis Highlighted At UK Parliament Exhibition

The Mary Dinah Foundation (MDF) has brought the humanitarian crisis in the Sahel region to the forefront of policy discussions in the United Kingdom, hosting a photography exhibition at the UK Parliament that highlighted what speakers described as “silent emergencies” affecting millions.

According to a statement by the Foundation, signed by its chief executive officer, Mary Dinah, and made available to journalsts on Wednesday,
the exhibition, held at the House of Commons and organised in partnership with Labour MP Kate Osamor, featured original field photographs from refugee camps and remote communities across the Sahel, capturing the impact of conflict, food insecurity and climate-related shocks.

Addressing lawmakers, development partners and humanitarian actors, MDF founder and chief executive officer, Mary Dinah, said the images were intended to confront decision-makers with the scale and urgency of the crisis.

“These photographs are unflinching,” she said. “They do not hide the devastation of violence and despair. They do not soften the desperation of mothers who do not know how they will feed their children tomorrow.”

She added that the exhibition exposes “the scars of war” and “the silence that follows mass displacement,” urging immediate and coordinated action to address the situation.

The Sahel region, stretching across countries south of the Sahara Desert, is currently facing one of the world’s fastest-growing displacement crises, driven by a combination of armed conflict, extreme poverty and climate change. Despite this, speakers noted that the crisis continues to receive limited global attention.

On his part, development consultant and CEO, International Organisation for Peace-Building and Social Justice UK, Ayo Adedoyin, emphasised the need for community-driven approaches to peacebuilding, particularly in Nigeria.

“Sustainable security cannot be achieved without grassroots peacebuilding and diaspora-led solidarity,” he said.

On the role of visual storytelling, Ayo Adeyinka of Tafeta Gallery said photography serves as both documentation and advocacy.

“These images are not just records of events; they are a call to see, to learn and to act,” he said, noting that they amplify voices often excluded from international discourse.

Nicki Clark of the Emergency Nutrition Network warned of worsening malnutrition across the region, particularly among children.

“Without urgent investment in prevention and treatment, the region risks losing an entire generation to preventable death and stunting,” she said.

Participants repeatedly described the Sahel as a “silent emergency,” underscoring the disconnect between the scale of the crisis and the level of international response.

Organisers said the exhibition was designed to bridge the gap between frontline humanitarian realities and policymaking, while encouraging stronger political and financial commitments.

The Mary Dinah Foundation said the initiative would serve as a platform for sustained engagement rather than a one-off intervention, with the aim of driving long-term attention and action on the crisis in the Sahel.
