Egyptian forward Mohamed Salah has completed a surprise move to Turkish Süper Lig side Trabzonspor, signing a two-year contract after leaving Liverpool on a free transfer.

Trabzonspor confirmed the deal on Thursday, bringing an end to Salah’s glittering nine-year spell at Anfield, where he established himself as one of the club’s greatest players.

The 34-year-old departs Liverpool after scoring 257 goals in 442 appearances, helping the Reds win the Premier League, UEFA Champions League, FA Cup and League Cup. He leaves as Liverpool’s third-highest goalscorer of all time, behind Ian Rush and Roger Hunt.

The Turkish club described Salah’s arrival as one of the biggest signings in its history.

Details released through Türkiye’s Public Disclosure Platform (KAP) revealed that Salah will earn a guaranteed €17 million per season. His package comprises an annual salary of €10 million and a €7 million signing bonus for each year of the contract, which runs until the summer of 2028.

The agreement also includes performance-related bonuses and entitles the Egypt captain to 20 per cent of revenue generated from merchandise bearing his name.

The deal ranks among the most lucrative contracts in Turkish football history.

Salah had been strongly linked with a move to Saudi Arabia in recent years, with Liverpool famously rejecting a reported £150 million bid from Al Ittihad in 2023. However, Trabzonspor ultimately secured the services of one of Africa’s greatest footballers after negotiations with fellow Turkish side Beşiktaş reportedly broke down.

The former Chelsea, Fiorentina and Roma star is expected to boost Trabzonspor’s ambitions both domestically and in Europe after the club finished third in the Turkish top flight last season to secure a place in the UEFA Europa League play-off round.

Salah also enjoyed a successful 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign with Egypt, scoring once and providing two assists as the Pharaohs reached the round of 16 before being eliminated by eventual champions Argentina.

His move to Trabzonspor brings to an end months of speculation surrounding his future following his departure from Liverpool, where he cemented his legacy as one of the Premier League’s finest forwards.
