The organisers of the annual Seyi Akinwunmi Charity Foundation (SACF) have expressed immense satisfaction with the project’s profound impact over the past decade.
Established in 2014, SACF began with a simple yet powerful aim: to ensure talented children wouldn’t have to choose between their education and their passion for football. This charitable initiative has since blossomed into a lasting legacy. Abayomi Ogunfunwa, a member of the organising team, highlighted on Monday that SACF is a truly distinctive project.
“We offer boundless hope through mentorship,” Ogunfuwa explained. “Once we identify and bring young individuals into our scheme, we monitor them continuously from around age 13 until they complete their education. It’s not a one-off event.”
He added: “Each year, we bring children together to emphasise the importance of both education and sport. On the main day, there will be football, entertainment, and of course, meals for all participating children.”
“The impact over the years has been immense, and we continue to support all those on our scholarships. While we prefer not to focus on numbers, we are delighted with the positive change and the smiles we bring to the faces of both the children and their parents by integrating football and education.”
The 2025 edition will feature six teams, with two women’s teams and four men’s teams already confirmed. The women’s sides include Golden Eko Ballers Women Team and Asisat Oshoala Girls Academy. For the boys, Golden Eko Ballers U-14 Team, Dosu Football Academy, 36 Lions Football Academy, and Ikorodu City Football Academy will compete for honours.
A novelty match is also planned between the Igbobi College Old Boys Association of the 2000 and 2001 sets.
Mr. Dotun Coker, Head of the Technical arm, assured that preparations for this year’s 11th event are complete. Igbobi College will host the edition on Saturday, 27th December, with significant backing from the ICOBA 78/80 set.
