Diego Simeone singled out captain Koke for special praise following Atletico Madrid’s Champions League semi-final exit at the hands of Arsenal.
The Spanish side fell to a 1-0 defeat in the second leg at the Emirates Stadium, with Bukayo Saka scoring the decisive goal that sealed a 2-1 aggregate victory for the hosts.
Despite the disappointment, Simeone commended Koke’s performance, describing it as “incredible” and a masterclass in midfield control and leadership. The Argentine manager emphasised his admiration for the veteran’s consistency and influence, particularly at this stage of his career.
Simeone also took the opportunity to speak about Antoine Griezmann, urging supporters to rally behind the forward in the closing weeks of the season. Griezmann is expected to depart the club for Major League Soccer side Orlando City, bringing an end to a significant chapter in his Atletico career.
The manager stressed that the Frenchman deserves recognition and encouragement for his recent contributions, noting that his efforts have remained commendable despite ongoing speculation about his future.
Reflecting on the tie, Simeone acknowledged Arsenal’s quality and admitted his side struggled to impose themselves sufficiently over the two legs. Nevertheless, he expressed pride in his players’ commitment and vowed that Atletico would regroup and return stronger next season.
