Liverpool manager Arne Slot has expressed his firm belief that attacking midfielder Florian Wirtz will significantly increase his goal count for the club. Amidst what was, at times, another somewhat challenging display from the Reds, Wirtz emerged as a clear standout, netting his maiden goal for Liverpool and comfortably securing the Man of the Match award. This victory marks the first time Liverpool have achieved three consecutive Premier League wins since August.
Speaking to the club’s official website after the match, the Dutch tactician highlighted Wirtz’s burgeoning influence, suggesting he is beginning to demonstrate precisely why Liverpool invested heavily in him this summer.
“I’m quite sure about it; it was a relief for him,” Slot stated. “This I could clearly see from his reaction after he scored the goal. And I observed the same from his teammates; I think they were genuinely happy for him to get that first goal. In football, perhaps rightly so, we are primarily judged on results, and individuals are often judged on goals and assists. We sometimes tend to overlook the other contributions made during a game.”
Slot continued, “I believe he’s had multiple strong performances for us, but I also feel he’s improving with every single game he plays, getting fitter and fitter. He was getting closer and closer to his first goal, and it’s no surprise to me that he scored one today. However, he would probably be the first to understand that one goal isn’t sufficient, and hopefully, he will score many more for us than just this one. But I also thoroughly enjoyed his performance for large parts of the game today;
I think he was special in many moments.”
