The Nigerian Environmental Society (NES) has renewed its commitment to protecting the environment within the country.
Its president, Dr. Efegbidiki Okobia, made the commitment at a press briefing of NES@ 40 and the 34th national conference/annual general meeting in Abuja.
He said the anniversary is a celebration of longevity and a moment of deep reflection on achievements, challenges and renewed commitment to Nigeria and the global south.
Okobia said over the years, NES has remained steadfast and committed to environmental protection, adding that its focus is on the promotion of sustainable development, and advancement of environmental professionalism within and outside Nigeria.
“Over the past four decades, NES has played active roles in local, national, regional, and international environmental programs; provided expert opinions on critical national policies, and served as a rallying point for environmental advocacy, policy direction, multilateral organisations, youth environmental stewardship and capacity building,” he said.
He said this year’s national conference with theme “Sustainable Cities with Smart Solutions in Africa: The Place of Environmental Management and Social Justice” is structured to reflect our environmental realities and aspirations of bringing together experts, policymakers, industry players as well as bank executives, environmental regulators, legislators including academia, youth leaders, development partners, and stakeholders from across Nigeria and beyond.
