Parents, guardians, and others have backed moves by the Abia State government to introduce changes in the operations of private schools in the state.
The changes include abolishing graduation ceremonies for nursery, primary, and secondary school students who are not in exiting classes.
The other is a ban on the compulsory combination of textbook and workbook by publishers which makes it impossible for others to use such textbooks later.
The commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu had said these when he briefed the press on this week’s Executive Council meeting chaired by Governor Alex Otti in Umuahia, the capital.
Kanu said the issues were part of the celebrations during a recent government-organised education stakeholders meeting on the sector’s way forward.
”The government has agreed that going forward, graduation ceremonies in the schools would only be limited to primary 6 pupils and Senior Secondary 3 students’.
”These ceremonies are creating deep holes in the pockets of parents; so they took that decision to ensure that parents stop complaining in that regard,” he argued.
Speaking to LEADERSHIP in the capital following the announcement, James Agwu, Uka Elendu, Joyce Okoro, and Charles Ekeoma said they can’t agree more with the government.
