Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has expressed his unwavering belief that his team can still secure a spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Despite facing tough hurdles in the qualifying rounds, Chelle remains confident that a turnaround is possible.

Three-time African champions, currently find themselves in a precarious position in their qualifying group, sitting in fourth place and trailing leaders South Africa by six points. With only four matches left to play, the pressure is mounting for the players to deliver a stellar performance to enhance their chances of qualification.

Adding a silver lining to their campaign, Nigeria recently triumphed in the Unity Cup invitational tournament held in London, a victory that Chelle believes will bolster the players’ confidence as they head into the crucial qualifying matches scheduled for September and October.

In his assessment of the Super Eagles’ performance at the Unity Cup, Chelle remarked, “We scored goals, created chances, and showed good signs in our overall play.”
He emphasised the importance of cohesion in both their attacking and defensive strategies, stating,

“What matters most is playing together – in both attack and defence.”
However, the Malian Coach was quick to point out that hard work and determination are essential if the team is to realise their World Cup aspirations. “We have to keep improving both physically and mentally.

We must become true warriors on the pitch,” he insisted.
Looking ahead, the Super Eagles will host the Amavubi of Rwanda in Uyo before making the trip to South Africa when the qualifiers resume in September. The upcoming matches are pivotal, and the team is gearing up to harness the momentum gained from their recent success in London.
