Taming The Monster Of Inter-agency Clashes

For some inexplicable reasons Nigeria has continued to be thrust into negative spotlight by needless inter-agency clashes that have not only claimed lives but have also tarnished the image of the government and the nation at large.

 The most recent incident in Adamawa State, where a conflict between the police and the military led to the tragic killing of Inspector Jacob Daniel, serves as a stark reminder of the pressing need to address the growing menace of inter-agency rivalry.

The Adamawa State Police Command confirmed the unfortunate incident, highlighting a disturbing exchange of gunfire and a brutal attack on the Police Command headquarters.

 In the considered opinion of this newspaper, these clashes not only endanger the lives of those directly involved but also pose a significant threat to the stability of the nation.

As a matter of utmost urgency, we urge the authorities to institute a thorough investigation into this incident, and those found responsible for perpetrating this violence should face swift and decisive consequences.

 This lamentable outrage comes on the heels of another confrontation, this time between officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and personnel of the Nigerian Air Force at the Kaduna Zonal Command.

 The motive behind the NAF personnel storming the EFCC office was an attempt to release their colleagues who had been apprehended by EFCC operatives.

 This audacious move raises serious concerns about the rule of law and the proper functioning of law enforcement agencies.

 Furthermore, the interference of the Department of State Security (DSS) in preventing EFCC officials from accessing their office in Ikoyi, Lagos, in May this year further exacerbates the alarming trend of inter-agency rivalry.

 These incidents underscore a disturbing pattern that has persisted for years, eroding public trust in the institutions that are meant to protect and serve.

 In our view, the consequences of these clashes are not confined to the immediate loss of life and damage to property. They send shockwaves throughout the nation, casting a shadow over the collective effort to combat pressing challenges such as banditry and insurgency in the northern regions.

 At a time when unity is paramount, internal strife within the security architecture weakens the nation’s ability to confront external threats.

 The federal government must take decisive action to address the root causes of inter-agency clashes. This involves a comprehensive review of the institutional structures, protocols, and communication channels that govern the interactions between various law enforcement and security agencies.

 A collaborative and transparent approach is necessary to foster a spirit of unity and shared purpose among these organisations.

 It is also imperative to point out that accountability must be a cornerstone of any strategy aimed at eliminating inter-agency rivalry.

We strongly suggest that those found responsible for perpetrating violence, obstructing the duties of other agencies, or compromising the rule of law must face legal consequences.

 The dismissal of officers involved in such incidents is not only a matter of justice but also a crucial step in rebuilding public confidence in the institutions entrusted with ensuring the safety and well-being of the citizens.

 It is important for the leadership of law enforcement agencies to prioritize professionalism, discipline, and adherence to established protocols.

Clear lines of communication and coordination must be established to prevent misunderstandings that can escalate into fatal confrontations.

The Presidency also has a key role to play. President Bola Tinubu should firmly and publicly denounce this rivalry while warning the agencies that such actions will no longer be tolerated.

 Where there are conflicts over areas of jurisdiction or authority, the President has a duty to provide clear direction.

 At a time when Nigerians are already dealing with profound security, economic and social problems, they neither deserve nor can afford the additional burden of witnessing security agencies fight each other. This is the time for partnership, not egotistic conflict. Enough is enough.
