The Taraba State government has moved to end the rearing of animals within residential areas and across Jalingo, the state capital, to curb environmental nuisance, protect public health and to restore cleanliness and orderliness to the city.
This is just as the state government has warned that any violators of the ban forthwith risk a N50,000 fine.
The chairman of the Taraba State Environmental Sanitation Agency (TSESA), Mr Iliya Kefas, disclosed this while speaking during the state’s environmental sanitation exercise in Jalingo.
Mr. Kefas insisted that, the prohibition was backed by existing environmental laws.
He said the regulation, already enacted by the state House of Assembly and assented by the executive, was aimed at restoring cleanliness, orderliness and a greener environment across the state capital.
He, particularly warned residents against keeping cows and other animals within communities, urging owners to provide appropriate accommodation for their animals outside residential areas.
“This is in our law. It was approved by the House of Assembly and accepted by the Executive Council. Rearing cows inside the community is wrong and prohibited.
“We want a new Taraba, a new phase of Taraba, a greener Taraba. From now to four years, we want Taraba to be changed. But how can we move forward when people are rearing animals inside the town?” he said.
He further disclosed that the agency’s environmental laws contained sanctions for violations, including a N50,000 penalty for those who contravene the prohibition on animal rearing within designated urban areas.
