There was heightened tension at the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Abuja on Thursday, following the commission’s decision to de-list the National Working Committee (NWC) of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) from its official portal.

A heavy security presence was observed around the commission’s office in Maitama, with roads leading to the premises blocked by security vehicles. Personnel of the Nigerian Police Force (NPF) and the Department of State Services (DSS) were strategically deployed to prevent a breakdown of law and order.

The development came amid growing discontent among party supporters and allied groups. Angry protesters had gathered at the INEC headquarters.

LEADERSHIP reports that INEC, in its announcement on Wednesday, removed the names of former Senate President David Mark and ex-Osun State governor Rauf Aregbesola from its portal as National Chairman and National Secretary of the ADC, respectively, citing a court order.

The commission also stated that it would not recognise Nafiu Bala Gombe, who is seeking to be declared national chairman through judicial means.

In addition, INEC declared that it would suspend recognition of all factions within the party and refrain from monitoring any conventions or congresses organised by groups aligned with the affected leaders.

According to the electoral body, the decision will remain in effect pending the final determination of a substantive suit currently before the Federal High Court.

As of the time of filing this report, the situation around the INEC headquarters remained tense, with security operatives maintaining a strong presence at the facility to forestall any potential unrest.
