The Promised Land, a highly anticipated series about Moses and the people of Israel’s journey to Canaan, premiered on October 1, 2025.

The series, written and directed by Mitch Hudson, is not your typical, epic take on the biblical event. No, those have been done by earlier films like ‘The Ten Commandments’ (1956), ‘Exodus: Gods and Kings’ (2014) and ‘Testament: The Story of Moses’ (2024).

‘The Promised Land’ (2025) is a fusion of comedy and documentary that expands on the emotions and reactions of characters from biblical scenes, the way we’d imagine any human being would. Of course, the show does apply creative license by adding or removing certain plots/characters to make for a good story, but not with the intention to either mock or blaspheme the word of God.

For instance, it would make absolute sense for Korah to feel Moses shouldn’t be the leader, and to think nepotism was at play when Moses made Aaron his brother, the High Priest of the Israelites – thoughts that would eventually result in his rebellion. Likewise, we should expect an exasperated Miriam who had no say at the time when it comes to counselling the people despite proffering a good solution because women did not hold council with men in the early biblical era.

The show’s charm is that you get to hear the characters’ thoughts, which they share with us through a break in the fourth wall by directly speaking into the camera. Thoughts that they didn’t speak out loud, but had, like every other human being in their shoes, would have had.

The showrunners had it right, saying, “We are a group of filmmakers who love the Bible and the humour in it. Our show depicts these stories as if there was a documentary crew present, so … we have taken some creative license. But we hope our adaptation of these stories makes us go back and read the real stories as recorded in the scriptures.”
