‘This Is My Last Day As A Christian’, Catholic Knight Protests Non-recognition Of Late Ubah

A Knight of the Catholic Church, Sir James Louise, popularly known as Ebube Anaedo, has ‘renounced Christianity’ following the Catholic Church’s failure to acknowledge the contributions of the late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah to the construction of the Our Lady of Assumption Cathedral in Nnewi, Anambra State.

The cathedral, described as a grand and colorful edifice, was inaugurated for use on Tuesday in a ceremony attended by several dignitaries and prominent personalities.

Reports indicated that Senator Ubah had volunteered to fund and undertake the construction of the cathedral and had completed approximately 85 per cent of the project before a new bishop, Dr. Jonas-Benson Okoye, was posted to the Nnewi Diocese in 2022. The bishop was said to have subsequently instructed the late businessman and lawmaker to step away from the project.

LEADERSHIP reports that the directive caused friction between the bishop and the late lawmaker, with many observers arguing that Ubah deserved due recognition, having invested heavily in the cathedral’s construction.

However, during the inauguration ceremony on Wednesday, Sir James Louise protested after discovering that Senator Ubah’s name was neither mentioned during the event nor included in the official brochure as a contributor to the project.

In a video that has since gone viral on social media, Louise was seen breaking down in tears after the Mass, expressing disappointment that the late senator’s efforts were ignored. The visibly distraught knight removed his knighthood regalia, including his cap and shoes, and announced his decision to quit Christianity.

“This is my last day as a Christian. I’m done. This is awful,” he said.

“How could a cathedral that Ifeanyi Ubah laboured to build be inaugurated without any mention of his name? This is bad. I am done with Christianity.”

The video has generated widespread reactions online, with many social media users criticising the Catholic Church for allegedly failing to acknowledge the late senator’s contribution.

As of the time of filing this report, the Catholic Diocese of Nnewi had not issued any official statement addressing the matter.
