Nigeria, one of TikTok’s quickest-growing African markets, saw 4.8 million user videos taken down in Q1 2026 amid the platform’s intensified push to curb misinformation, harmful material, and policy infractions

The latest Community Guidelines Enforcement Report showed that Nigeria recorded one of the highest volumes of content removals on the platform during the period under review, reflecting the rapid growth in content creation and TikTok’s increased investment in automated moderation systems.

According to the report, the majority of the offending videos were detected before they were reported by users, with most removed within 24 hours of being uploaded, underscoring the company’s growing reliance on artificial intelligence to identify harmful content at scale.

TikTok said the enforcement action forms part of its broader commitment to creating a safer online environment by tackling misinformation, hate speech, scams, graphic content and other materials that violate its Community Guidelines. The platform noted that automated technologies now serve as the first line of defence in detecting policy breaches before they reach wider audiences.

The report also highlighted the company’s increasing focus on artificial intelligence-generated content. TikTok said creators are required to label realistic AI-generated images, videos and audio, while technologies such as automated detection systems, invisible watermarking and Content Credentials are being deployed to identify manipulated media.

Globally, the platform continued to strengthen content moderation, removing millions of videos through automated systems while maintaining a high proactive detection rate. The company said the measures are aimed at protecting users as content creation and digital engagement continue to rise worldwide.

TikTok also disclosed that it intensified enforcement of its LIVE policies by interrupting thousands of livestreams that breached its guidelines, while taking action against creators who violated monetisation rules. The company said these measures are intended to educate users and improve compliance with platform standards.

On AI-generated content, TikTok said it remains committed to preventing the spread of misleading material through stricter labelling requirements and improved detection technologies.

The company said: “We continue to require creators to label realistic AI-generated images, audio and video content while deploying automated detection systems and industry-standard Content Credentials technology to identify such materials.”

TikTok added that its safety strategy combines artificial intelligence with the expertise of thousands of Trust and Safety professionals worldwide.

It stated: “We remain committed to providing a safe digital environment by combining advanced moderation technologies with the expertise of thousands of trust and safety professionals worldwide.”

The platform said it will continue collaborating with governments, regulators and civil society organisations, including Nigeria’s Office of the National Security Adviser, to promote safer digital spaces and combat harmful online content.
