The Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, has dismissed claims that the President promised to forgo a second-term bid if he failed to improve electricity supply in Nigeria.

Speaking during an interview on Arise Television on Tuesday, Onanuga said President Tinubu never made such a commitment and accused critics of misrepresenting the administration’s campaign promises.

According to him, while Tinubu pledged to improve electricity generation, transmission and distribution, he never tied his political future or re-election prospects to achieving uninterrupted power supply.

Onanuga’s remarks were in response to recent comments by Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Peter Obi, who questioned the administration’s performance and suggested that leaders should be held accountable for campaign promises.

The presidential aide maintained that the Tinubu administration remains committed to reforms aimed at improving power supply and other critical sectors of the economy, adding that Nigerians would ultimately assess the government’s performance at the ballot box.

He stressed that the President should be judged based on ongoing efforts to address longstanding challenges in the power sector rather than on claims that were never made.
