Pep Guardiola, the manager of Manchester City, has called upon Premier League clubs to adapt their strategies in order to combat the increasing efficacy of set-piece plays. His remarks follow comments from Liverpool’s manager, Arne Slot, who suggested that the emphasis on set pieces is detracting from the enjoyment of the Premier League.
Arsenal, in particular, has been dubbed “Set Piece FC” due to their exceptional performance from dead-ball situations, prompting other teams to take note and adjust their tactics. Speaking on Tuesday, just ahead of City’s crucial clash against relegation-threatened Nottingham Forest, Guardiola asserted that teams must evolve to meet this challenge.
“It’s part of the dynamics of the game,” Guardiola stated. “You can complain, but adaptation is essential. Football has always been diverse in style across different nations, and that’s what makes it attractive.”
The City boss acknowledged some validity in Slot’s observations but maintained that the variety of play styles adds to the allure of the sport. “How dull would it be if every team played the same way?” he queried, highlighting the uniqueness of English football compared to its counterparts in Spain and Italy.
Currently, Manchester City trails league leaders Arsenal by five points, although they hold a game in hand. Guardiola emphasised the importance of the upcoming fixtures as the season reaches a pivotal stage. “The last ten games are crucial,” he remarked. “We cannot afford to drop points.”
