US President Donald Trump has announced that White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt will leave her position at the end of August but remain a senior adviser to his administration.

Trump made the announcement on Wednesday, praising Leavitt as one of his most trusted aides and saying her decision was motivated by a desire to spend more time with her young children and family.

“Our wonderful White House Press Secretary, and one of my most trusted aides, Karoline Leavitt, will be departing her role at the end of the month so she can spend more time with her beautiful young children and family,” Trump said in a social media post.

He added that Leavitt would continue to serve as one of his top outside advisers and remain an influential figure within the Republican Party.

At 28, Leavitt became the youngest person ever to serve as a White House press secretary. During her tenure, she became known for her combative exchanges with journalists and her strong defence of Trump and his policies during often-contentious press briefings.

Leavitt has consistently portrayed herself as a forceful defender of the administration, frequently challenging what she described as liberal media bias and highlighting the president’s achievements.

In May, she announced the birth of her second child, a daughter named Viviana. Her maternity leave had reportedly been delayed following an alleged assassination attempt on Trump, in which a gunman was said to have attempted to storm the White House Correspondents’ Dinner.

Her departure comes at a politically challenging period for Trump, with his approval ratings under pressure and Republicans facing the prospect of significant losses in the November midterm congressional elections.

Reacting to the announcement, Leavitt thanked Trump for giving her the opportunity to represent his administration from the White House podium.
