England manager Thomas Tuchel has expressed his disappointment after supporters booed Ben White during his international comeback in Friday’s 1-1 friendly draw with Uruguay at Wembley.
White, making his first appearance for England since leaving the 2022 World Cup camp for personal reasons, endured a mixed reception from the home crowd. The 28-year-old appeared to have sealed victory when he tapped in England’s opener in the 81st minute, only to concede a stoppage-time penalty that Federico Valverde converted to rescue a draw.
The Arsenal defender was jeered when his name was announced after scoring his maiden international goal, capping a turbulent return to the national side.
White’s absence from the squad had previously been linked to reports of a disagreement with former assistant coach Steve Holland — claims denied by then manager Gareth Southgate — before he made himself unavailable for selection.
Tuchel admitted the reaction from fans was unhelpful.
“This has happened to players here before, and it’s disappointing because it doesn’t help anyone,” he said.
“It felt too good to be true when he scored what looked like the winner — but it wasn’t to be.”
England defender Harry Maguire also rallied behind his team-mate, praising White’s impact off the bench and dismissing the penalty decision as harsh.
