Uba Sani Spent Over N896m On KASU Staff Welfare – Kaduna Govt

The Kaduna State Government has disclosed that over eight hundred and ninety six millions of naira has been expended on the welfare of staff at Kaduna State University (KASU) by governor Uba Sani’s administration.

Addressing a news conference in Kaduna on Wednesday, over the two-week strike action ultimatum issued by the KASU branch of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Principal Private Secretary to the governor, Prof. Bello Ayuba, explained that fifty nine academic staff left KASU and not two hundred lecturers as claimed by the ASUU-KASU.

Ayuba explained that some of them that exited was not due to poor conditions of service.

According to him, “The attention of the Kaduna State Government has been drawn to a claim by the KASU branch of ASUU that about 200 Professors and other academic staff of the University had left the system due to poor conditions of service, and has subsequently issued a two-week ultimatum to the university authorities and by implication the state government to implement the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU agreement or face total and indefinite strike”

“We are not here to join issues with ASUU considering that no serious efforts were made in respect of the concerns raised in the media by ASUU to engage the relevant authorities on their demands.

“Rather we are duty bound to put the records straight in order to disabuse the minds of the public to the misinformation put forth which in the light of the impending political activities is already being manipulated by mischief makers to suit their narrow selfish political interest, regardless of the wide serious consequences to the public”

Ayuba stated that, “It may interest you to know that between January, 2024 to date, 59 academic staff have left the university out of which a total of 17 Professors and Associate Professors left by voluntary resignation and transfer of service. To be precise, two Professors had left during the period, two Associate Professors, six senior lecturers, ten of the rank of lecturer 1, 15 of rank of lecturer II, and 12 each of the rank of Assistant lecturer and Graduate Assistant”

“Generally, staff movements reflect the dynamism of a university including the coming on stream of new universities and the upward mobility that go with it which attract staff of various ranks, as well as retirement and completion of temporary, visiting, sabbatical and contract appointments, all which show record of staff disengagement. To term all such official movements out of the university the result of poor conditions of service without relevant data of the departures is pure mischief which does not speak well of people willing to make the best of their workplace”

On staff welfare, Ayuba said, “Gentleman of the press, the Uba Sani administration has been unrelenting in its commitment to staff welfare. To date, over 896 million naira has been expended on the welfare of staff at the university. In May, 2025 for instance, over N146.4 million was released to the university to clear withheld salaries and outstanding SIWES allowances inherited from the previous administration and a monthly standing intervention of N50 million was approved for the institution for staff and sundry claims”

“Other outstanding personnel liabilities settled by the present administration include the sum of over N118 million accounting for the 60% and 36% of unpaid salary in 2017, over N96 million paid as Arrears of Hazard allowance. Together with the settlement of unpaid 2022 salary of over N896 million amounted to a total of over N1 billion naira paid out as outstanding personnel liabilities at KASU. I don’t believe you can term this administration as indifferent to the welfare of its staff” he explained.

The Principal Private Secretary added, “The state government has prioritized education in the state and in its tertiary institutions in particular. It has provided over N200 million for overheads to KASU which the institution has expended on laboratory chemicals and reagents, students field trips, examinations and other essential academic activities.

“It also invested over N300 million on accreditations and resource verification with the result that more than 57 academic programmes have been accredited, 60 academic programmes successfully verified by the National Universities Commission (NUC) while seven (7) professional programmes have secured full accreditation.
“Other advances made by KASU include the establishment of 14 research centers, two specialized institutes and has secured high-profile local and international research grants including a 1 billion naira TETFund grant for commercial agriculture” Ayuba said.
