UK Declares Support For Ukraine Despite Russia’s Escalation Warning

United Kingdom Prime Minister Andy Burnham has vowed that Britain will continue to support Ukraine “100 per cent,”despite warnings from Russia over British military assistance to Kyiv.

Burnham said the UK would remain committed to Ukraine after Moscow accused Britain of escalating the war following confirmation that British-made drones had been used in recent Ukrainian strikes against targets inside Russia.

“We are not fair-weather friends; we will be there in Ukraine’s hour of need, and that won’t change,” Burnham said.

The Russian embassy in the UK accused Britain of deliberately escalating the conflict and warned that the deeper London became involved, the greater the price it would pay.

Responding to the warning, Burnham said Britain was providing Ukraine with the equipment it needed to defend itself against Russia.

“We are providing support so that Ukraine can defend itself and that’s been the British position all the way through this conflict,” he said.

Russia has previously criticised Britain’s military support for Ukraine, including the supply of drone technology and Storm Shadow missiles.

The Russian embassy said Britain’s actions would “inevitably carry consequences for which it will have to answer,” although it did not specify what measures Moscow might take.

Britain has been among Ukraine’s strongest international supporters since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022.

The UK Ministry of Defence has reaffirmed its commitment to supplying Ukraine with the equipment needed to defend itself against Russian President Vladimir Putin’s invasion.

Ukraine has stepped up long-range attacks inside Russia in recent weeks, targeting oil facilities, military installations and logistics centres.

Two British companies are known to have built drones supplied to Ukraine, while a military source confirmed that UK-made drones had been used in recent attacks.

In April, Britain announced plans to provide Ukraine with tens of thousands of drones, including long-range strike systems, in what it described as its largest military aid package to date.

Burnham also told Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky during a visit to a British naval base last month that Kyiv could “count on the UK for as long as it takes”.

He said Britain would share its new “Stone Cloak” technology with Ukraine, designed to help disrupt Russian air defences through electronic warfare.

The latest Russian warning comes amid a sharp increase in Ukrainian drone attacks.

Russian officials said hundreds of drones were launched towards the Moscow region overnight, with air defences destroying more than 180. Several people were reportedly injured.

On Saturday night, Ukraine launched about 822 drones towards Russia, including around 600 directed at Moscow, according to Russian officials.

Seven deaths were reported across Russia following the weekend attacks.

Russia has also continued its missile and drone campaign against Ukraine, with at least 17 people reportedly killed in the latest attacks.

Ten people were killed in the north-eastern Ukrainian village of Pechenihy after missiles struck homes, a café and a post office, while other deaths were reported in Sumy, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson.

The escalating attacks have raised concerns over the wider security implications of the conflict, particularly as Russia continues to threaten Western countries providing military support to Ukraine.

Despite the growing tensions, Burnham said Britain’s commitment to Ukraine would remain unchanged.
