The United Kingdom’s Special Envoy for Freedom of Religion or Belief, David Smith, has met with Governor Caleb Mutfwang to discuss the lingering security challenges in Plateau State, with talks centred on rebuilding trust, addressing the root causes of violence and promoting peaceful coexistence.

The meeting, disclosed in a post on the verified ‘UK in Nigeria’ Facebook page on Thursday, formed part of the envoy’s ongoing engagements with key Nigerian stakeholders on religious freedom, peacebuilding and national cohesion.

According to the UK Mission, discussions with the Plateau State governor focused on the history of the State, recurring violence and efforts aimed at fostering lasting peace through locally-driven initiatives.

“The UK stands ready to support practical, locally-led and lasting solutions,” the Mission stated.

The visit came amid renewed concerns over lingering insecurity and communal tensions in Plateau State, where attacks and reprisals in several communities have claimed several lives and displaced residents in recent months.

During his visit to Nigeria, Smith also held meetings with senior government officials, religious leaders and civil society groups as part of the UK’s Freedom of Religion or Belief strategy, with Nigeria identified as the first focus country under the initiative.

The envoy met with the National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu; Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, as well as leaders of the Nigeria Inter-Religious Council (NIREC), including CAN President, Bishop Daniel Okoh, and the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III.

Speaking at the end of the visit, Smith said he came to “listen, learn” and understand how freedom of religion or belief intersects with Nigeria’s broader security and cohesion challenges.

He stressed that sustainable progress must be Nigerian-led and rooted in inclusive dialogue and strong institutions, while reaffirming the UK’s commitment to supporting peace and stability efforts across the country.

The envoy’s engagements also included discussions around the UK-funded Strengthening Peace and Resilience in Nigeria programme, a £38 million initiative operating in States, including Plateau, Benue, Kaduna and Katsina.
